VPN networks
A VPN creates secure communication between two or more networks located in remote locations, using the most advanced encryption technologies.
The advantages offered by the creation of a “virtual” VPN network are:
- Security: every VPN connection uses a very high degree of protection and security, with initial authentication and encrypted communication protocols (PPTP, L2TP, IPSec etc.);
- Cost reduction: each site will communicate with the remote one as if they were on the same Local Network, without any dedicated line. The VPNs are made using the normal Internet connection lines (ADSL, HDSL, etc.);
- Integration of multiple services: through a VPN, customers and suppliers can be granted access to a part of shared information on the company network through appropriate authorizations;
- Maximum flexibility: at any time you can access any resource on the network, from any remote location you are.
Types of Connection VPNs
The VPN network can be implemented according to two types.
The first is typical of connecting a peripheral branch to the central office and is characterized by a pair of firewall able to encrypt all the traffic going through them. End users have no perception of applied cryptography. A bottleneck, in terms of performance, can be constituted by the under-sizing of the firewall and by the geographical typology of the network in which the encrypted data will pass.
The second type of VPN is represented by the connection between the notebook on the field or the PC at home, to a branch or to the central office. In this case, the PC must be equipped with a specific driver for VPN devices (Mobile user VPN).
The connection can be activated by any ISP (Internet service provider) and operates as follows: the remote PC provides for data encryption, while the remote office firewall ensures decryption, leaving only IP routing information on the Internet.
